Brian served his apprenticeship with F. Robson & Co. of Newcastle upon Tyne from 1964 to 1972.
During his time there work involved servicing and repairing all types of scientific instruments; servicing, calibrating and looking after the Met Office barometers as well as Newcastle Airport Fortin barometers and anemometers and Coastguard barometers and barographs.
